Cabinet Painting in Bel Air, MD

A Fresh Kitchen Without a Full Remodel

Cabinets take up a large portion of a kitchen’s visual space. When the layout and cabinetry still work well, but the color or finish feels dated, painting can make a dramatic difference without the cost and disruption of replacing the cabinets.

Professional cabinet painting can be a great fit when you want to:

  • Update stained or dated wood cabinets
  • Change dark cabinets to a lighter, brighter color
  • Introduce a new cabinet color as part of a larger kitchen update
  • Refresh bathroom vanities or other built-in cabinetry
  • Preserve cabinets that are still in good condition rather than replacing them

The key is proper preparation. Cabinets are touched, cleaned, and used every day, so they require a different approach than painting a typical wall.

Our Cabinet Painting Process

Kitchen cabinet painting process in Cockeysville, MD by Kaizen Painters

A lasting cabinet finish starts long before the final coat.

Every kitchen is different, so we evaluate the existing cabinets and finish before determining the right preparation and painting approach. Our professional cabinet painters take the time to prepare surfaces carefully and work methodically through the project.

1. Protect the Kitchen and Work Area

Before painting begins, we protect the surrounding floors, countertops, appliances and other surfaces that aren’t being painted. Keeping an organized, clean work area is part of doing the job well.

2. Remove Doors, Drawers and Hardware

Cabinet doors, drawer fronts and applicable hardware are carefully removed and organized so the components can be properly prepared and painted.

3. Clean and Prepare the Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets accumulate cooking residue, oils, and everyday buildup that can interfere with paint adhesion. We clean, prepare, and sand surfaces as needed before coating begins.

4. Repair and Prime

We address minor surface imperfections as needed, then prime the cabinets based on the existing surface and finish. Proper preparation and adhesion are especially important on high-use cabinetry.

5. Apply the Cabinet Finish

We apply the appropriate cabinet coating using professional techniques designed to produce a smooth, consistent appearance and a durable finish.

6. Reassemble and Inspect

Once the finish is ready, we reinstall doors, drawers, and hardware. We inspect the completed work, handle the final details, and leave the work area clean.

Professional Preparation

Cabinet painting isn’t wall painting on a smaller surface. We pay close attention to cleaning, preparation, adhesion, and application because those details directly affect the appearance and durability of the finished cabinets.

– Bill W.

Cabinet Painting vs. Cabinet Replacement

If your cabinets are structurally sound and you like the existing layout, painting them can be an excellent alternative to replacement.

Painting lets you keep the cabinets you already have while making a significant change to the kitchen’s appearance. Replacement makes more sense when cabinets are badly damaged, the layout no longer works, or you’re looking for substantial changes to the cabinetry itself.

During your consultation, we can look at your existing cabinets and talk through whether painting makes sense for the result you’re hoping to achieve.

It was a great overall experience. From getting Brian's estimate, to coordinating with Tracey, and finally having Jorge and his crew prep and paint the family room and kitchen, I was extremely pleased. Notable was their level 4 drywall preparation which smoothed out previous drywall repairs as well as some original builder blemishes. I would use them again without hesitation.

Guillermo and his crew painted our 2 story foyer and outside shutters. They took a foyer that had many imperfections from a previous painter and transformed it. Incredible! Outside shutters are neatly painted and look like new. The crew is friendly, professional, efficient, knowledgeable about their craft and demonstrates attention to detail. They did a great job cleaning up after their work each day. I would highly recommend Kaizen Painters for any future painting I might have and, of course, would request Guillermo as Crew Chief. Gentlemen, job WELL Done!!!

Frequently Asked Questions About Cabinet Painting

Is painting kitchen cabinets worth it?

If your cabinets are structurally sound and you’re happy with the existing layout, painting can be a cost-effective way to significantly update your kitchen without replacing the cabinetry. Proper preparation and the right coatings are important for achieving a finish designed to handle everyday use.

The lifespan depends on the cabinet material, existing finish, preparation, products used and how the cabinets are treated after painting. Properly prepared and professionally painted cabinets can last for years. Following recommended cleaning and care practices will also help protect the finish.

Many wood and previously painted cabinets are good candidates for painting, but not every cabinet surface or condition is the same. We evaluate the existing cabinetry and finish before recommending an approach.

The best application method depends on the component being painted, the existing cabinetry, and the project conditions. Kaizen uses professional application techniques selected to produce a smooth, consistent finish while protecting the surrounding home.

Typically, we remove doors and drawer fronts so they can be properly prepared and finished. We also remove hardware as needed and carefully organize components for reinstallation.

This depends on the scope of the project and which cabinet surfaces are being painted. We’ll explain what needs to be cleared or prepared before your project begins so you know exactly what to expect.

Yes. Cabinet color should work with more than the walls—it should complement elements such as countertops, backsplash, flooring, trim, and the amount of natural light in the kitchen. We can help you think through options that work with the rest of the space. Ask us about a complimentary color consultation.

Yes. In addition to kitchen cabinet painting, Kaizen can paint bathroom vanities and other appropriate cabinetry and built-ins. We can evaluate the surfaces during your consultation.

Kaizen Painters provides professional cabinet painting throughout Baltimore County, Harford County and surrounding Maryland communities, including Bel Air, Abingdon, Fallston, Forest Hill, Havre de Grace, Jarrettsville, Kingsville, Lutherville-Timonium, Monkton, Parkton and Phoenix.
